My first WordPress Theme

wordpress-logo1.jpgFinally… my first WordPress theme is here. It is a three-column design, inspired by the WordPress.com website. As it is my first design, it is very simple. No sidebar widgets.

If you would like to try it, please feel free to download it here. Instructions on how to install the theme can be found in here at wordpress.org.

If you use it, and like it, I appreciate if you do not remove the link at the footer. Any comment/bugs/queries/questions, please put in the comment section of this post.

Kaspersky detects all Blogspot sites as phishing sites (updates)

A few days ago, I wrote about Kaspersky detects all Blogspot sites as phishing sites. Apparently, Kaspersky has fixed this issue with its latest updates – signatures published on 11-02-08 8:07:13AM. Now, there’s no more phishing reports from Kaspersky when I go to any of the blogspot.com sites.

Print whatever on your computer screen

printdesktop1.jpgThis utility allows you to print whatever on your computer screen – directly to the printer. It is a free little utility and is very simple to use. In fact, it is designed for the *average* user who do not know how (or do not want) to go through the hassle of capturing the screen, paste it in another programme (e.g. Word, PaintBrush, etc.), and then print them on paper.

With this utility, what you need to do is:

1. Click Start > PrintDeskTop

In fact, there’s only one step that is needed. Very simple. Here are some of points I want to highlight after using it for a while:

  • You can create a shortcut for the task. For example, you can set Ctrl+Alt+P. This way, you do not need to click Start > PrintDeskTop, just press Ctrl+Alt+P.
  • It will print to your “default” printer.
  • Quality of printout is quite good.

You can download the utility here.

Google Adsense not appearing

google_adsense_logo.jpgFor the past few weeks, my Google ads are not appearing on my notebook. Both IE7 and Firefox 2.0 that I have are not displaying them. I’ve tried everything that I know and everything that I found on the internet. Some people suggested to check for the windows hosts file to see whether there’s any entry or references to adwords, googlesyndication. I did this but the problem still there.

This morning, I tried accessing my website from my wife’s notebook and to my surprise, the ads were there. Tested on both IE7 and Firefox 2.0 on her notebook – both are okay.

How was it fixed? Keep on reading.

Tabbed PuTTY

I found a great utility that can transform your PuTTY into a multi-tabbed programme. It’s called PuTTY Connection Manager. It is actually an add-on programme that can place your different instances of PuTTY sessions into tabs in a single window. It’s free for non-commercial use.

This is what you will get once you’ve completed the installation:

Cool heh?

ScribeFire blog editor – the review

After spending some time using the ScribeFire 1.4.2 blog editor, here is the review. My review is made by comparing the built-in editor in WordPress with ScribeFire.

Hyperlink
In WordPress editor, you have the option to specify whether to open a link into a new window or tab. However, in ScribeFire, there are no such option. All links created in a post will be opened in the same window or tab. To me, this is not good. There is workaround to this, however, by using the “source editing” option:
By clicking the icon, you will see the source itself. In this option, you can manually add “target=”_blank”" in the hyperlink address of the link that you want.

Image
Once you put up an image in your post, there is no option to specify the alignment, border, vertical or horizontal space. The workaround for this is as per above as well, i.e. by using the “source editing” option. You can manually insert “align=”left” border=”0″ hspace=”10″ vspace=”10″ /” in the image tag.

Split post
There is no option to specify split post (… read the rest of this entry…). Again, by using the “source editing” option, you can manually specify “<!–more–>” at the point where you want to split your post.

Save as note
This option is very handy in case you want to save your post temporarily before posting. Simply click the “Save as Note” button at the bottom left of the screen to save your post and continue writing later.

Conclusion:
Other than the above, ScribeFire is a very good editor. I will use this as my blog editor from now on.

Powered by ScribeFire.
